Dehydration occurs when the loss of water exceeds the animal's ability to replinish them. Not only is water lost, important electrolytes are lost as well. The most common cause of dehydration includes diarrhea, severe vomiting, low fluid intake, and heat stroke. The most common sign of dehydration is extreme skin elasticity. In a dehydration animal, the skin does not spring back to place after being pulled. Treating dehydration requires immediate veterinary attention whereby fluids are delivered to the animal intravaneously or subcutaneously.
