Flush the injury immediately with cool running water. Gently apply an ice pack wrapped in a soft towel to the area. Seek veterinary attention immediately. A first-degree burn yields skin that is red, slightly swollen and painful. Healing occurs in about five days. However, a second-degree burn is deeper and results in blistering and extreme pain. Healing takes about 21 days without infection. A third-degree burn results in complete damage to the skin and down into the layers of fat. The skins appears charred, dry, and leathery. Survival is unlikely if over 30% of the body is affected.
