I am sometimes blown away by how caring and compassionate the vets are at our clinic. Not long ago a very sweet puppy named Otis was taken into the Homeless Pets Foundation; he has the prettiest blue eyes and is always happy to see you, he also has bone cancer. When he came to the clinic, his left back leg was severely swollen just below his knee, causing him severe pain.
But instead of putting him down, Dr. Good had Dr. Phil amputate the bad leg. However, this option didn’t come without its own set of complications. First of all, several vets questioned the surgery. Because this type of cancer readily spreads to the lungs, some people didn't think it was worth it to remove Otis' painful leg and ease his suffering. And second, besides the usual risks of going under anesthesia, in order to take off Otis’s leg, the doctor had to cut through major arteries. But luckily the surgery went smoothly. His recovery was slow, but within a week after surgery Otis was up and around, giving everyone kisses and jumping up to give hugs. He is completely oblivious to the fact that he has only three legs, and is now in a very loving foster family, waiting for someone to come and give him his forever home!
